Technology is the literacy focus for October. The internet provides many valuable resources for teachers and students. Some teacher resources available through MCS are Nettrekker, Unitedstreaming and the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL). Links to these resources are found in my favorites sites. The Media Resource Library is a video resource that is available at the board. (Please see me if you need help in accessing this resource)
An iSafe unit will be taught this year concerning student safety on the internet. Please talk to your children about using technology safely.
Student links to author and book series are found in the Author section below.

The Family Literarcy Night on December 12 was a fun night for parents and students. The library program part featured our fourth grade students. A Reader's Theater production of the fable, The Sun and the Wind and a folklore parade were presented by the fourth grade. The fourth grade classes are studying fables, fairy tales, tall tales and myths -- genres of folklore. Parents were also able to visit the book fair during the Literacy Night festivities.
The December Scholastic book fair was a success. Students were able to purchase books at half price fulfilling the purpose of the book fair which is to provide an exciting setting for the purchase of books at low cost thus encouraging our students to read.
Allen Priest in Ms Stigger's fifth grade class (501) was the winner of our Spelling Bee on November 17 He will be competing in the Commercial Appeal Spelling Bee on February 3, 2007 Please congratulate him on his success and encourage him in his next competition. Thank you.
The Hamilton Elementary Library has received the Partners in Literacy Grant of $5,655.2 to purchase non-fiction books this year. This is a wonderful gift to upgrade our library by providing more recent infromation for Hamilton Elementary students. Non fiction books have been order and will soon provide a wealth of new information especially in science and social studies for our students.
Soon students will be able to enjoy the library during extended hours.

NEW !!! 2006-07 The library schedule has changed to an A schedule and B schedule alternating weeks. (This change has allowed us to receive the Partners in Literacy Grant moneys)
The A schedule looks much like last year's schedule with each class iin Pre-K - 5 having an assigned library skills lesson time. Also there are some open check-out times in the schedule.
The B schedule looks very different from last year's schedule. This is the flexible schedule required by the grant. In this schedule there is a storytime for Kindergarten and Ms Fossett's classes, and research times for 1st - 5th. The research times are divided into 1st - 3rd and 4th-5th. Teachers and the librarian collaborate concerning a research project or skills unit to be taught and work as a team when teaching the lesson. The other available time is scheduled for open check-out in the main library and the annex library..
