Welcome to the Library Media Center! The LMC is open from 7:00 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. and after school Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:00 to 4:00. At the present time, students in Kindergarten through 6th grade come to the library for 45 minutes biweekly. This alternates with a flexible schedule every other week so that students and staff may have access to the library at any time. The LMC is open for scheduling of classes by teachers and/or research on Fridays and on alternating open weeks. Students and teachers may utilize the library at any time during the day.
Our LMC is fully automated with Book Systems Atriuum web-based library automation software. Students and staff may access the library catalog from any computer in the school that has internet access. At this time the service is not available outside the Memphis City School's intranet.
During the 2005-2006 school year, we were awarded a Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries Award for $5000 to expand our library collection. The focus of this grant was to update the science and social studies sections of our collection. An analysis of our collection showed that the average age of these two sections was over twenty years old. Through collaboration with the teachers, books were ordered that supported our curriculum.
This year we are one of thirty-six schools in the Memphis City Schools district that have been awarded an Improving Literacy Through School Libraries federal grant. The name of the MCS project is "Partners in Literacy". Find out more about this grant in the News and Highlights section below.

One of the primary goals of Frayser Elementary and Memphis City Schools is to improve the literacy level and academic achievement of our students. As part of the "Partners in Literacy" project of the Improving Literacy through School Libraries Grant, the Library Media Center will focus on research-based strategies to promote literacy. Each month will focus on a specific aspect. This month the focus is on Literature Circles. The Library Media Specialist has attended training on this strategy and will act as a resource to the teachers on its utilization in the classroom. In addition she will collaborate with the teachers both individually and on grade level to locate materials to supplement thier curriculum.

This year we have been awarded an Improving Literacy through School Libraries federal grant through the district's "Partners in Literacy" Project to improve the literacy level and academic achievement of our students through an expanded library collection with a focus on non-fiction, increased collaboration between the librarian, teachers, and administrator, and extended library hours. We are excited about the opportunities this grant will provide us.
MCS Reads is focusing on Swap-A-Book for the month of December. Our fourth grade teachers have been busy planning some wonderful activities for our students and staff. Stay tuned for more information.
Accelerated Reader is now web-based. Students may take a test at any time during the school day. Accelerated Reader will not be available for students to access when school is not in sesion.
We have access to all Accelerated Reader tests currently available. To find out if a book has an AR test available, visit the AR Quiz store to search for a book by its title or by its author. See the website link below.
